Building an Author Brand from the Ground Up
Gil Frank is an author whose memoir was born from a deeply personal journey of love, loss, and healing following the passing of his wife. As he prepared to publish and promote his work, he needed more than traditional marketing support; he needed a complete brand identity and digital presence that authentically reflected his story while creating meaningful connections with future readers.
Over a ten-month consulting partnership, I worked alongside Gil to build that foundation from the ground up, transforming his vision into a cohesive author brand designed for long-term growth.
OverviewWhen we began working together, Gil had no established online presence. My role extended far beyond traditional marketing support; I served as his marketing consultant, strategist, creative partner, and project manager throughout the development of his author brand.
Together, we built a complete marketing ecosystem that included his visual identity, website, branding toolkit, newsletter strategy, speaking engagement materials, event marketing, promotional roadmap, and long-term marketing plan. Every element was intentionally designed to help position Gil as a credible, approachable author while creating opportunities to grow his readership and share his story with a wider audience.
Throughout the partnership, I collaborated closely with Gil and external marketing professionals, coordinated creative vendors, attended speaking engagements, and provided ongoing strategic guidance as his marketing needs evolved.
ChallengeGil had written a deeply personal memoir with the goal of honoring his wife's legacy and connecting with readers through storytelling, but he had virtually no digital presence or established author brand. Without a website, visual identity, marketing strategy, or audience engagement plan, there was no clear path for readers to discover his work or for him to promote future speaking engagements and book-related opportunities.
The challenge was to build an authentic author brand from the ground up, one that respected the emotional nature of his story while creating a professional marketing foundation capable of supporting long-term growth.

ObjectiveThe primary objective was to develop a cohesive author brand that would establish credibility, increase visibility, and create meaningful opportunities for reader engagement. Through branding, website development, email marketing, strategic planning, and promotional outreach, the goal was to transform Gil's personal story into a recognizable and sustainable platform capable of supporting book sales, speaking engagements, and future publishing initiatives.
Strategy
Rather than approaching the project as a series of individual marketing tasks, I developed a comprehensive brand strategy that established every major component of Gil's public presence. The focus was not only on promoting a single book, but on creating a long-term platform that could support his growth as an author for years to come.
My strategy centered on building a consistent, authentic brand experience across every reader touchpoint. This included designing a recognizable visual identity, developing a strategic marketing roadmap, creating communication systems that nurtured relationships with readers, and identifying opportunities to expand Gil's visibility through speaking engagements and partnerships.
Key initiatives included:
Developing and editing recurring newsletters to strengthen reader relationships through storytelling, updates, and behind-the-scenes content.
Writing promotional one-sheets and outreach materials used to secure speaking engagements and author events.
Researching speaking opportunities, accompanying Gil to events, coordinating with external marketing professionals, and supporting strategic conversations around Amazon book marketing and long-term promotional efforts.
Managing creative projects, including coordinating professional photography, maintaining brand consistency across deliverables, and serving as Gil's primary marketing consultant throughout the engagement.
Designing Gil's logo, visual identity, and comprehensive branding toolkit, including typography, color palette, target audience, keywords, and tone of voice to ensure brand consistency across all marketing materials.
Designing and launching his author website to establish a professional online presence and provide readers with a central destination to learn about his work.
Creating a long-term marketing plan and campaign calendar outlining brand development, email marketing, community engagement, promotional campaigns, partnership opportunities, and long-term growth initiatives.

Gil at a speaking event
ReflectionWorking with Gil completely changed the way I think about marketing. While the project began with building a website and promoting a book, it quickly evolved into something much deeper. I realized that effective marketing isn't about creating content for the sake of visibility; it's about understanding the person behind the brand and building a strategy that genuinely reflects who they are.
Throughout our ten-month partnership, I learned that marketing is rarely a straight path. As Gil's goals evolved, our strategy evolved with them. Whether we were revisiting his long-term vision, refining his messaging, developing new resources, or preparing for speaking engagements, every decision began with listening first. That experience taught me the importance of adaptability, empathy, and creating marketing strategies that can grow alongside the people they represent.
More than any other project, this experience strengthened my confidence as both a marketer and a consultant. It challenged me to think beyond individual deliverables and focus instead on building sustainable systems, fostering meaningful relationships, and creating a brand that authentically represented someone's story. It reinforced a lesson I now carry into every project: the strongest marketing doesn't begin with a campaign; it begins with understanding people.
